Frequently Asked Questions

Who can L & M help?
Couples who have an uncontested divorce. This is a divorce in which both parties agree on how to divide all of their property and on all other issues in their divorce. Also, both parties must be willing to sign the divorce papers.

Exactly what does L & M do?
We are paralegals. L & M will custom type all the documents needed for your divorce (usually between 30 to 60 pages) based on your personal information. L & M will notarize your signatures when you sign the documents, and will instruct you how to complete your divorce, a very simple process.

How long does it take?
Papers are typed within one week after we receive your personal information. It then takes from four to eight weeks to complete your divorce, depending on the county where you file.

Do I have to go to court?
In divorces with no children involved, a hearing is not usually required. A judge will read your papers in chambers and you will be notified by mail when your divorce is complete. When children are involved, one party must attend a brief, simple hearing. We will instruct you what to do at the hearing.

What if we have children and/or a house?
L & M can still do the work for you, as long as the divorce is uncontested.

What if I don't know where my spouse is?
We can still do the work for you although the procedure is different. The process also costs slightly more and takes more time.

Do we have to come to L & M's office?
No. We can do any or all of our work through the mail, on the telephone and by fax.

What does it cost?
Our fee for divorce with no children or real estate involved is $99. When either of these are involved, our price is higher because there is significantly more typing to do. We charge an additional $60 for children (does not matter how many), and $60 per piece of real estate. Also, you must pay a court filing fee between $330 to $335 directly to the county where you file for the court to process your divorce.
